Health and Developmental Monitoring
Every well-child visit is important!
General health monitoring is an integral part of well-child care for
all children. Children with special health care needs deserve the same
comprehensive health monitoring as their peers without special health care needs.
The pressures of special health issues management and time available
in the practice setting often draw attention away from routine and preventive
care. Sometimes families and CSHCN visit their supspecialty providers
to the exclusion than their primary care providers. Routine preventive
health issues, such as immunizations and developmental age-appropriate
anticipatory guidance, are at risk of being neglected.
Well-child visits and health monitoring for CSHCN should include a
review of general health and development in concert with management
of health issues specific to their condition. In this section, you will
find information, resources, and practice tools to help you and your
families optimize well-child care, preventive care and developmental
monitoring.
