  • Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT)

The M-CHAT is designed to screen for autism spectrum disorders in toddlers, especially at 18 and 24 months, although it can be used over the age of 12 months.  It can be completed by a parent. Positive screens suggest a high risk for an autism spectrum disorder and may indicate a need for referral.

Importantly, the follow-up interview should be administered for children with positive screens. The interview greatly reduces the false positive rate, which avoids unnecessary referrals. Please note that if the healthcare provider has concerns about ASDs, children should be referred to a specialist regardless of the score on the M-CHAT or M-CHAT follow-up interview.
